During church at Watkinsville First Baptist today, Pastor Carlos asked a question that took me back to Christmas break freshman year of college. I had gone with my mom to visit Pastor Fletcher, her childhood pastor, and we started talking about missions. As he probed into my life to try to determine if my heart was in the right place for missions, he asked the exact same question Pastor Carlos asked today: How is your prayer life? That question got me thinking the first time I heard it, and it got me thinking again today. It's a tough question to answer. You can say "My prayer life is good" or "It's bad," but it's not the kind of question that can be satisfied with that kind of answer. You have to go into detail, but even when you go into detail, no matter how good your prayer life is, there's always room for improvement, and no matter how "bad" your prayer life is, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. And it's hard to determine what constitutes a good prayer life.
Anyway, when Pastor Carlos asked that question, this time instead of making me search my mind for a way to answer it, it made me ask more questions. Questions like "How is your prayer life?" are great for monitoring one's personal spiritual growth and should therefore be asked regularly. God asked me several more questions throughout the course of the service today, and I thought I'd share them.
- What has the Lord been teaching you lately?
- What is the Lord teaching you right now?
- Where has God brought you, and where has He brought you from?
- Who is God to you?
- Are you making anyone or anything your god besides the Lord?
- How do you see and relate to the Lord?
- Who are you to God?
- Who/what defines you?
- What are you passionate about?
- What is God passionate about? Do your passions line up with His?
- Who/what do you identify yourself with?
- Who/what do you represent?
- Are you representing well?
- Who/what represents you?
